If you are thinking of becoming a home health care nurse, then you have chosen an exceptional field to go into. The nursing fields are growing and the home health care nursing field is no different.  Today, nursing curriculums include specialized programs for home health care nursing students.  These programs teach nurses how to conduct themselves in a patients home, and train them in how to care for patients in this atmosphere.

There is a great need for home health care nurses for a variety of reasons:

1.    Medicare, Medicaid have changed treatment methods and prefer to keep patients in their homes and as independent as possible for longer periods of time.
2.    The baby boomers are aging and large numbers of people need extra help in their homes every day.
3.    Technological advances have made the length of time a patient stays in a hospital after treatment, or surgery much shorter.
4.    There has been an increase in the number of outpatient procedures, and these people need home health care nurses for a certain time period.
5.    Technology has allowed us to have longer longevity but chronic illnesses have increased, and these require the assistance of home health care nurses.

What do You Need to Become a Home Health Care Professional?

Home health care professionals will be trained in a wide variety of subjects, including how to be an emotional support to patients, how to educate patients, and how to help patients recover more quickly. There are also other specializations for nurses who work with children or with the elderly and their chronic illnesses.

A nurse who chooses to work in home health care needs to be able to adjust to different home settings. He or she must have good social skills and be able to handle patients in a firm yet friendly way.  This person needs to be patient and understanding of the patient, and the patients´ family. He or she will need to be able to make quick autonomous decisions the moment he enters the home. The nurse will need to be positive and know how to work positively with the patient.

Nurses that work with children who have disabilities need completely different skills. When a nurse works closely with the child, and his family, the lifespan and quality of life of the child increases, and this is a special reward this type of nurse has.
Working in home health care has its own special rewards, but also requires a special person with special qualities. If you do decide to enter this field, be assured that you will always have job security.
