Dogs cannot be bad; it is the handler who is poor. It is frustrating when a dog simply jumps on your clean clothes as you are taking a walk down the road. Trainers have been heard to comment that dogs are easer to train to be obedient than their handlers. Dogs that must be leash trained for walking in public or at the park need practice; this begins around the yard or in a smaller location. Shouting or punishing your pet for engaging in this normal communication is counterproductive – as well as confusing to the animal.

So why does a dog bark?

It is not a good idea having your puppy bark, even during play if you are likely too shout at him when he barks as an adult. You could learn from your trainer how to reinforce certain behaviors in a puppy, which you desire, by giving them the occasional gift for being good.

How do you make your new puppy stop the undesired behavior?
You need to know how to reward your pet so they get the correct message and repeat the desired behavior or cease the less desirable traits. Remember that you can not coach a dog to adapt to certain behaviors which are not part of his genetic make-up. In case you are particular about teaching your pet some specific behavioral skills, you should choose one from the breed which would provide you with the type of traits you are searching for.

When does a dog become good?
Well, when you train them with patience, resolve and of course, a great deal of affection.

If you are like me then you really just wanted the power to wish a bacterial vaginosis problem away because it seems so hard to get rid of and you don’t even know what you did to get it.

While it could be something you did, it is really hard to know exactly what happened. I like to think that generally, in today’s world we just each such terrible food all the time that our bodies just don’t have the same strong immune system to help fight off bacteria.

So I suggest to start eating really healthy, fresh food, nothing that has been prepared. No restaurant food. No frozen food. Eat fresh, fresh, fresh.

There are plenty of women who may have Bacterial Vaginosis and are not even aware that they have this problem. But most women who realize they do have something wrong are first alerted by the terrible odor (Fishy Vaginal Odor)coming from their vagina.

Most try extra washing, scrubbing and even douching, thinking the problem has to do with cleanliness. This is the wrong approach and will not solve Bacterial Vaginosis.

You cannot wash BV away. Just not going to happen. It didn’t start because you were unclean and it won’t go away just because you start washing and douching.

Having not been been in contact with the folks and siblings for over a decade I found it a bit worrying after I spoke to a relative of mine that I found on the internet and he informed me that my fathers brother had a triple bypass surgery and his sister had a pace maker fitted.

The fact that both of them had heart attacks immediately put me on code red for any potential issues that might indicate a potential heart attack. I didn’t immediately go out and purchase a Zoll M defibrillator just in case my heart went into fibrillation but I did get a bit paranoid.

I had just put my sole trading company on hold and had been comfort eating a bit, which had layed the weight on, 14 stone at 6 foot for me isn’t a good weight. Call it psychosomatic but I started to worry about a pain that I was feeling in my chest.

Anyway a blood test at the doctors later informed me that my blood cholesterol were to high and the Doctor informed me I was borderline needing a prescription to reduce level down due to my bloodlines history of heart conditions (though she said there wasn’t any proof that a parents brothers and sisters effected their progeny).

Wake up!!!! straight away i cut out butter, cheese (love cheese!) and didn’t eat chocolate or things that had a high fat content. Started eating food that reduced cholesterol (stuff from the supermarket nothing stating magical properties just normal food) and started Mountain biking to the then newly started job (ten miles there and back off road, 14 miles by road).

I purchased a set of scales that initially recorded my fat levels being 25 or 26 which was much to high I now have it down to 20-21 which is normal. I am now 12 and a half stone and back to my original healthy self. There has been no need to return to the doctors and am not renting a Zoll M defibrillator on the off chance, because I am confident my cholesterol levels are back under control even giving myself chocolate, cheese and butter in moderation.

If you feel that you weigh to much or have a inactive life and suffer from being de energised think about what you eat and start exercising it wont take long (about a year for me) to have a real effect to your life.

Are you in trouble paying your debt? It’s true. Many are experiencing financial problems. This is due to financial crisis the world is going through now.

Importantly, ask for their full name, any information about them in order for you to find the same person on your next visit. It will save you time and money as well. Most creditors are open to hear your plea. They are eager to listen instead of you declaring bankrupt. 

After a serious talk with your creditors, don’t forget to sign up both a written agreement. You must record important receipts, notes and phone calls accordingly for your future copy. You should also read get out of debt books to help you learn more about the process of eliminating your credit card debt.

For many directory owners it could be helpful to have a link to different geometric areas of the world or of their territory, whether it be for location specific information, sales of products or types of directory. A visual graphic like a map with areas that are clickable would be the right idea. Visitors can be presented with a clickable map of Germany rather than a bunch of links or a dropdown menu for Germany.

For a webmaster to make such an application it takes time and care but the results will look impressive and give the website a touch of class.

First you need to find the correct size of map, either by scanning and reducing to desired size and then working to make it clear and colorful in a decent image program. That includes enhancing the boundaries of the states that you will eventually make clickable.

Next, the difficult part is to import the map image into a html editor or some map editing software that is capable of drawing clickable regions upon the image and in turn make these hotspots into readable coordinates within the html code and when that is done each region will be clickable when presented in the browser.

Each clickable region can hyperlink to an url of your choice so for a clickable county map of the UK for example can link to an informative page for your visitors when they choose Wales, Ireland, Yorkshire etc etc Great for sending visitors to images or your affiliate links or regional news as another example.

Of course all this work to make a clickable map is too time consuming or probably unfathomable for some people without knowledge of website building but the vast majority know how to add hyperlinks.

You can find ready made clickable maps of UKat clickablemaps.com or the webmaster can make one just for you. Clickable maps of Europe, UK, USA and Asia are all available and with the new MapHilight JQuery Plugin by David Lynch. Now that would save time and a nice idea too.

Since the discovery of leptin in 1994, many have hoped that the hormone would be a promising weight-loss treatment for humans. Leptin acts as a signal to help the body decide when it has eaten enough food to feel full. The amount of leptin in the blood has been directly linked to body fat.

After receiving leptin replacement therapy, research subjects with a recessive mutation in the obesity (ob) gene – a population both deficient in Leptin and morbidly obese – lost about half of their body weight while regulating their own food intake. (Medical news Today 4/5/2005).

If you take it at face value, it seems as if the research is saying that more leptin will help you lose weight. This research refers to subjects with a genetic basis for obesity who were deficient in leptin. But obese individuals tend to have more and larger leptin-producing fat cells than thinner people. They simply are not getting vital chemical signals to their brains that tell them to stop eating.

To illustrate my point:

Despite an assiduous search, scientists have found only a half-dozen people in the world who make no leptin. These people eat voraciously – one 3-year-old girl consumed 2,000 calories at a sitting. When several of these people were treated with leptin, they lost their appetites and their weight plummeted. (The New York Times 31/10/1999).

Don’t get me wrong, if it helps those who cannot make leptin, then this is a major breakthrough for them.

A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, goes a long way toward proving to me that more leptin does not equal less weight in very overweight people in the general population.

To make things worse, a hormone called leptin that was supposed to be the magic bullet for obesity, making people effortlessly lose fat while retaining muscle, looks like a bust. In a preliminary study reported last week, most people who took leptin lost little or no weight – one fat person who took the highest dose actually gained 20 pounds. (The New York Times 31/10/1999).

Researchers at Harvard School of Public Health in Boston say lean, physically active people have low levels of leptin, which is produced by the body’s fat cells and is believed to be a major culprit in causing obesity. The study finds that when couch potatoes start exercising regularly, their leptin levels decrease.

“As you get fatter, your body makes more leptin,” says Eric B. Rimm, Sc.D., associate professor of epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health, and a co-author of the study. “But when you exercise, the amount of leptin in the blood decreases. Most of the time, you also lose weight, which means your risk of heart disease decreases too.” (Science Daily 7/3/2000).

Normally, when leptin levels in blood go up, the brain signals us to stop eating. But since obesity isn’t the result of a lack of leptin, it is a lack of response to leptin, and obese individuals tend to have more and larger leptin-producing fat cells (leptin is a hormone secreted by fat cells) than thinner people, their leptin levels increase substantially with every pound of additional weight gain.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but there appears to be no logic in the idea of taking more leptin to reduce weight if you have an impaired response to leptin.

It is important to keep in mind that the study that showed that raising leptin levels in people who have already lost weight helps them to keep the weight off. It does not help people to lose weight in the first place. It prevents the yo-yoing that most dieters go through as their leptin levels drop and the brain tries to compensate by increasing hunger.

Weight loss lowers levels of leptin, which in turn can restore an impaired response to leptin signaling.

We can see that soap making has become one of the most popular hobbies and interests in recent years as people choose to spend their time in the comfort of their homes making clothes, bedding and other things made by the use of quilting and embroidery. There are many quilting and embroidery classes out there that one can choose to join in order to get to the highest level of this oh so enjoyable a craft. When one joins a club they are then able to associate with like minded people who they can they go on to ascertain from and taking their quilting and embroidery skills to the next level.

Indeed many are biased towards the aforementioned concerns but we also see that soap making is something that is really making a challenge to be one of the most enjoyable and practiced hobby and pastime that we see people taking part in. It interesting to note that we all need to use soap and there are various types of soap of varying shapes, sizes and prices. We can purchase soap that is made with various fragrances, colors and also filled with various delicacies and oils. When one starts to look more closely into the art of soap making then eyes will be opened to understand just what it takes to excel in the making of soap as a pastime.

There are many that will say that the reading of basket making books is the way forward as out of all of the indoor pastimes and hobbies, that of basket weaving is the only real pastime to follow. Learning basket weaving techniques will give the hobbyist a great dimension to their skillset that they can be proud of.

Introduction

Welcome to An Insight into Stock Photography. This article is based on a talk given at Focus on Imaging 2007. I hope you find it interesting. Just remember these are my views only, they are not gospel and have been put together based solely on my experience of shooting and making money from stock photography, primarily through Alamy and photographic magazines.

We’ve seen a lot of change in the markets and the economy in general. This has affected the stock photography market. But don’t lose faith , magazines and newspapers have an insatiable appetite for images.

One Approach

Fingers in pies – and finding opportunities to build a business from photography. And stock photography is just part of that – a chance for someone else to promote your pictures for you and to for you to get paid, while off doing something else. It’s like having commission only sales people working for you. The thing is you have to give them something saleable but you can’t give them a kick up the backside if you’re not selling much!!

Some commercial photographers don’t do it, some do, some make a living from it. The choices and balance is up to you, as a commercial photographer I do some of it.

It may seem like an uphill challenge but it’s not and it’s within most people’s reach . Provided you understand the customer. This applies to both the Picture Library and the Ultimate Buyers.

Take a look around you. Pictures are everywhere – the printed media in its widest context has a massive need hunger for images on a daily basis.

Humans generally don’t like reading online – well not for very long – they like tactile magazines to flick though and dip into and if they didn’t, the magazine industry would be long dead by now – wouldn’t it !!

Every magazine, exhibition, web site, company brochure and newspaper all need pictures on a regular basis – and if they don’t have it or can’t send a photographer to go out and shoot it – then they’ll buy it.

Printed media works on deadlines that go right down to the wire, so immediacy is important and the shots can’t be the same old ones used month in month out.

The picture buyer generally will work to longer lead times and less tight deadlines – but not always – the images they buy can be more general or iconic – like these motivation posters you see in some shops .

Take for instance a sports shot of runners on a track – you might see it in the sports pages of a newspaper for a day, then maybe in a Athletics magazine that month – but it can soon become a poster with a motivational statement “Defeat” or “Winner” that has a whole new market.

So where are you – the photographer – in the food chain so to speak. Take a look below.

• The Picture Buyer

You’re on the top of the list with the stock library between you and the buyer, but at the bottom of the food chain when it comes to getting paid. But whilst you need to meet the technical requirements of the library and other submission requirements, it’s the image buyer you must be thinking of long before you even contemplate picking up the camera.

The stock library will do the sales and marketing of your images, for a percentage which varies from library to library, but they must have images that buyers want.

Before you sign up, read through the agreement and see if the set up suits your requirements.

Diverse Sectors

Each of these publications, Gossip magazines, The Times Newspaper, Corporate Publications, serve a different market – but each buy photos from Alamy to mention just one library – they also buy from many others too – in order to make the publication that day, week or month.

So what sort of pictures do these publications buy? Well it’s very varied. Just flick through and look at the side of the shot, it’s likely to have an image source next to it.

• Take a Break – items / products, staged poses – youth etc.
• Daily mail – travel
• Environment – utilities, waste, pollution etc, – front cover.

Easy Money – NO!

Some say it’s a numbers game – true to some extent, but the way I look at it is this, if you’ve got 10,000 images of shots that won’t sell – you’ve got nothing .

For me as a professional photographer that provides photography services, it’s the long term view – looking to build up and maintain a set of saleable images.

Remember pictures are perishable – i.e. – they become stale – and this will vary dependent upon the industry sector or subject they apply to.

Transport, fashion, IT, business, communications all need, in my view, re-shooting each year. For example a man in a suit by a computer the size of a house in the 1950′s isn’t the modern industry image of today.

Wildlife, sky scenes, landscapes, travel pictures – less so – but look at any developing city – take London – since the Wheel and the Gherkin went up all the skylines are different, also look at Dubai – changing all the time.

Easy money – no it’s not – but you can build up an underlying income if you think about saleable pictures and keep them relevant – remember they have to illustrate a story – so need to tell a story in their own right.

What is Stock

So let’s take a look at how you get accepted and who there is to choose from. Each Library has its own benefits and key target markets, so find one that suits you and what you are good at shooting.

Most will have web sites and these will stipulate how to join of make submissions.

$ Sites

Personally I don’t like them and here’s why. I’m going to set you a challenge and at the end of it I will buy the photograph from you. So you go and shoot a subject you like, do your research, do the shoot, post produce the image and upload it to my site and hey presto – I pay you 50p at today’s exchange rate — any takers ? I rest my case!

Submission Rules

All picture libraries will set technical standards and these will vary depending on how much server space they want to invest in.

Alamy work to 48mb TIFF minimum – 1, to keep the bar high enough that only the serious photographer applies and 2, to give their customers’ choice and immediate access to high quality images. Now they’ve changed this from the above to accept JPEG images – so your file size is down to around 8 meg.

Others work on thumbnail sizes then let the buyer contact you. Personally, I think, trying to judge a shot off a 100 or 200k image is not doing the shot justice.

Others specify minimum requirements of camera / model, or make you go though an approval or recommendation process. The thing with this is to find a library that matches your needs and capabilities. Also the amount time you have available to dedicate to stock photography.

Licenses

Non-Exclusive License

The buyer pays a licence fee each time they use the picture , but another image buyer can also purchase and use the image under the same licence.

The image buyer must specify, each time: intended use, media, territory and duration.

Pricing is based on intended use, media, duration and territory. The territorial pricing will be matched to the specific country.

Exclusive License

The picture buyer pays a licence fee each time they use the image.

The image buyer obtains exclusive use of an image under the terms of the licence: these terms may affect the use, media, territory and/or duration in which the image can by used by other buyers.

Rights protection can be an advantage for high-profile projects such as ad campaigns and promotions.

Royalty Free (RF)

The picture buyer pays a one-off fee – they do not have to pay royalties to contributors on a use-by-use basis.

The picture buyer will not know who else is using the image.

The picture buyer should check that the image has the appropriate releases before using the image where a release is required, for example Model release for people and property release for prominent buildings or logos.

Commission

• 50/50
• 60/40 but with global distribution
• 70/30
• 80/20 – Photographers Direct

Again find one that works for you and also find out when you’ll get paid and any minimum balances you must have to get paid. Sometimes you can wait 3 months for your money.

Work Flow

As a provider of photography services I shoot RAW and make minor adjustments to images. Now I’m using Adobe Lightroom in place of Raw Shooter and it’s speeded up my work flow considerably. Photoshop – I use this far less now but only to colour and touch out any dirt or what might look like dirt – by this I mean the occasional bird in the sky can look like sensor dust if it’s a way off in the distance. Resize your image. Output the file to the required format.

Then depending on the library upload over the Internet or cut a CD / DVD.

An Example

Take an older camera the Nikon D70 – 6.1 mega pixel camera. Raw files were around 4 or 5 MB and a TIFF was at 17MB with the JPEG at 4MB.

To meet the submission guidelines you need to Interpolate the image – make it bigger. In Photoshop this was Image > Image Size>Percent. Increase by 168% to give a 48 – 50 MB sized image. Then Save as Jpeg – 5 – 7MB.

I now shoot on a Nikon D300. RAW files are now 18 – 19 mb, opened in CS3 at 34 mb – requiring interpolation by only 20%.

What I’ve Sold

Wonderful sunsets, superb travel pictures, glamour images, or maybe my Dad’s cat! These are just a few examples of shots that have sold.
My dad’s cat, police cars, road signs, street scenes in New York, studio models and traffic jams.

Finding More Value

There are plenty of magazines that will promote your sold work, FPME (Now out of print March 2009) is just one of them and if you have sold a shot just let the editor know – chances are it can earn you some more money.

Not only that, look out for sites like Photographer Direct that offer an Image Request service – all you need to do is send 1 email. Also look to the corporate clients – they too may take an image if it fits with their style – be brave, make that approach, but do your research first.

Top Tips

Check out how many pictures of your subject matter already exist in a library, then ask yourself – can these be improved, shot differently or updated.

Read the picture needs issued by Stock libraries, they tell you what sells and what is needed, don’t ignore them.
